Clearing property and warming house

When my husband and I first got married we knew we didn’t have much cash to work with.

  • We didn’t want to continue renting a home together, because the cost was very high while the benefits were very low.

We were sick of throwing our money away at a lease each month instead of building equity together, so we decided to do whatever we had to in order to acquire our own home. Of course, our options were very limited. With our incomes and credit scores we didn’t have many banks lining up to shell out a mortgage, so we wound up with a very tiny budget. That’s how we wound up inhabiting a house that needed a little… work. For starters, the entire yard was full of old and dead brush. We had a ton of yard work to do and so little time to get it accomplished before the cold winter air started to flow into the area. As the chill settled, we cleaned out a small section of the back yard and began debating what we were going to do with all the brush. Thank god, that’s the exact day that our furnace failed. Out of the blue, our central heating system stopped operating late one Friday night and we had no option to have the furnace professionally repaired by an HVAC technician. Our bank accounts were simply too low to have a ventilation company address our failed heater. That’s when we realized what a blessing this nasty yard actually was. We didn’t need to pay for heat, we had endless heating fuel outside the house. Instead of carting away our dead brush and branches, we got an axe and started chopping firewood. Good thing it’s such a rundown yard; so far we’ve made it through 3 winters without paying the energy company a dime for our heat.
