End of sinus infections

So long, misery! I’m so done with the wheezing, the slow tickling drainage, and the randomly intense headaches all around my face.

I’m not going to have a dry nose from blowing or a sore throat from continual mucus dripping any longer.

I won’t be bedridden for days or dope myself up on harmful decongestants ever again. For anyone who’s ever had a deep sinus infection, you know what I’m talking about. Ugh, they are the WORST. For me, sinus infections start creeping in as soon as the air begins to chill outdoors. Soon the air indoors is just as chilly, and I am cold to the bone. When I can’t take it any longer, I reluctantly switch on that thermostat to power up the central heating system. That’s when the danger really begins. Suddenly my problem isn’t a full body chill, but a face-central pain that lasts the entire cold weather season. For years now, I’ve suffered through the pain and discomfort of the whole ordeal without finding a real solution, but those days are over baby! Recently I read an article online about the connection between cold winter air and respiratory illnesses. It turns out that sinus infections are not caused by the cold air itself, but the dry quality of the air. When you power up your own central furnace at home, it only works to draw more moisture out of the air that circulates through the house. Soon your home is essentially an air desert, and your mucous membranes are susceptible to infection from any airborne bacteria. Not my mucous membranes, they won’t do it anymore. Instead of suffering all season, I bought myself a dozen humidifiers on Black Friday last week. I’m going to have the most humid indoor air possible this winter.

Wrong kind of business major

As a young kid, I never could settle on a plan for my life. I didn’t know where I wanted to live, who I wanted to be with, or what I wanted to do for a career. In fact, I think I shuttled between about 10 different career choices between the ages of 14 and 15, alone. It’s a lot of pressure to be a young kid and find that you’re expected to choose a life path with your very limited world knowledge. The pressure only intensifies as you approach senior year, and everyone around you seems to have a plan. That’s how I wound up getting into business school right after highschool. I had no clue what to choose, so I went into the most basic major possible.. And I made a terrible mistake. Sure, I should have been interested in business, by my focus should have been the HVAC business. I slaved away at school, graduated with honors, and could not get a single job. Meanwhile, my brother took a different path and went to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning school. He took two years of coursework and completed an intensive internship before I had even gotten halfway through my schooling. When he graduated with an HVAC certification he was immediately hired by a huge ventilation company in the city. Meanwhile, I found myself working an entry level position at a crappy marketing company. My brother learned more and more about furnace and AC repair, and accelerated through the ranks of the other ventilation technicians. Soon, he was running the entire HVAC business and directing over 20 certified ventilation experts. He makes 6 figures with his 2 year air temperature control degree. Here I am, on the other hand, still working in a cubicle with my expensive 4 year business degree.

Clearing property and warming house

When my husband and I first got married we knew we didn’t have much cash to work with.

  • We didn’t want to continue renting a home together, because the cost was very high while the benefits were very low.

We were sick of throwing our money away at a lease each month instead of building equity together, so we decided to do whatever we had to in order to acquire our own home. Of course, our options were very limited. With our incomes and credit scores we didn’t have many banks lining up to shell out a mortgage, so we wound up with a very tiny budget. That’s how we wound up inhabiting a house that needed a little… work. For starters, the entire yard was full of old and dead brush. We had a ton of yard work to do and so little time to get it accomplished before the cold winter air started to flow into the area. As the chill settled, we cleaned out a small section of the back yard and began debating what we were going to do with all the brush. Thank god, that’s the exact day that our furnace failed. Out of the blue, our central heating system stopped operating late one Friday night and we had no option to have the furnace professionally repaired by an HVAC technician. Our bank accounts were simply too low to have a ventilation company address our failed heater. That’s when we realized what a blessing this nasty yard actually was. We didn’t need to pay for heat, we had endless heating fuel outside the house. Instead of carting away our dead brush and branches, we got an axe and started chopping firewood. Good thing it’s such a rundown yard; so far we’ve made it through 3 winters without paying the energy company a dime for our heat.

Extra job for heat

We all know that the winter is a super stressful time of year for the majority of us.

  • There are so many additional pressures to fit into your regular life between the months of October and January, not to mention the horrific outdoor air temperature making every aspect of normal life a complete disaster.

It’s hard to get anything done, let alone finding time to purchase the most perfectly thoughtful gifts, shovel the driveway every three days, and finding a second or third job in order to afford the seasonal hardships. Yes, of course I’m referring to the added costs of buying presents and visiting with family… but in our house the extra expenses include having to run the central heating at home. You see, our home is a rather spacious and poorly insulated old house. The attic is barely insulated and a lot of our heat flows straight out through the roof. There are many drafty windows that allow our hot air to leak out and the cool air to leak in. All in all, it’s a pricey feat just to keep the indoor air at a moderate temperature. That’s why I have to go out and find additional work around September each year, just to support our regular air temperature control at home. By the time I acquire my first real paycheck the cool fall air is settling over the area and I can afford to have a professional HVAC inspector come out to service the furnace. From there on out, it’s continual heating each day, every day. It’s a bummer to do all that work for very little, but at least every time the energy bill arrives in the mail I know I can pay to keep the family warm.

Waking up boyfriend

If there’s one thing I value about myself, it’s being quite resourceful.

  • I think that’s a good characteristic to have because it allows me to get by in life through less means than other humans.

It also is an all-encompassing sort of personality trait that actually indicates other proficiencies, in my opinion. To be resourceful, you also must be quite critical, logical, and creative in order to get the job done. And that’s exactly how I feel when I’m leveraging the HVAC system against my boyfriend in order to rouse him in the morning. You see, this boy is one of the hardest sleepers I’ve ever met. He also loves to sleep in all morning if you let him, which I don’t. I found that nagging him to get up only results in us fighting, but I can utilize our central heating and cooling equipment to further my own goals more covertly. Whenever I get up, I promptly go downstairs and start making coffee. I like to turn on a little fan in the kitchen so that the smell of my fresh brew is spread far and wide through the space, creating an inviting atmosphere downstairs. Then I go to the thermostat and crank up the heat, pumping hot air through every vent in the house. The increased air temperature soon makes my guy feel quite uncomfortable in his sleep, and he begins to stir in bed. As the air only gets hotter, he pulls off the covers and switches on the overhead fan. The coffee smell then wafts up to the bedroom from upstairs, filling the room with a delightful odor of morning joe. It’s only another minute or so after that before he comes grumpily stomping down the stairs, reaching his hand out for a cup of caffeine.

Birds go nuts

Sometimes I get myself into the most absurd situations somehow. I don’t go out looking for trouble or anything, but it sure feels like I’m on the search for something troublesome considering how often that’s the outcome. I often take on odd jobs to earn extra cash for instance, which can sometimes be more hassle than they are worth in the long run. For many years I’ve confidently watched people’s homes and animals while they went away on lavish vacations, for instance, so why wouldn’t I also agree to take on a birdwatching job when it was proposed to me by a coworker? I have some experience with birds, so I figured it would be no big deal to stop in and care for their avian pals. What I didn’t realize was how sensitive their pets would be to the indoor air quality. You see, when I first stopped in to feed and water the feathered friends, the air felt very thick, hot, and humid. I could barely breathe when the stuffy air combined with the general bird stench, so I went over to turn on the AC system for a little extra ventilation in the house. Everything was fine when I heard the AC unit kick into gear and the air began rushing through the air intake vent towards the cooling system. It was another moment, however, before the high quality treated indoor air started to flow out from the air vents all around us. Just as I stuck my head into a large cage to clean out the dirty droppings, the AC started to wash through the room. Just then, the birds began to panic over the flow of cold air. Everyone began flapping their wings, screeching, and jumping all over the cages – including the bird I was trying to care for. Five stitches later, I knew better than to operate the AC system while I was interacting with the birds.
